A circle, a square and a line
The house sits high on a hillside in South Kona, with the coast far below. Cut through the middle of it is a square, open to the sky, where the planting grows up through the center of the house. Off the roof rises a single fin, a square tower holding the library, reached from inside, with one tall window turned to the sea.
Built to the drawing
The drawings came from architect Craig Steely. A house with no straight exterior wall leaves nowhere to hide. Every panel of the black exterior was custom fabricated to the curve, the glass was cut to follow it, and the timber ceiling inside fans out from the center so every beam and every joint is on display for good. That only works if the people building it know from day one that their work will be seen.
Teamwork
Construction is not just about what we are building, but how we develop the project. That is easiest to see in the details nobody was asked to notice.
