An oceanfront residence on the lava in a gated Kona community, two stories under wide hip roofs, with a double-height living room, a catwalk above it, direct access to the water, and a pool that covers itself.
Scope
Build · Design · Permitting
On the lava at the water’s edge
The house sits on black lava at the shoreline, inside a gated community on the Kona coast, dark against the rock, with wide hip roofs to hold the sun and the rain off the glass. The lawn runs out from the lanai to the pool, and past that there is only the lava field, a ring of chairs around a fire pit, and the water, with a path straight down to it.
Inside, the living room rises the full height of the house. An open catwalk on the second story looks down into the room and out over the property to the coast. The television wall is faced in puka lava tile, the same stone that sits outside the glass, cut and set by hand. Much of the furniture was designed with the house and built into it.
Built for the coast
Everything within reach of the ocean mist was chosen to age well here: sealed hardwoods, honed stone, marine-grade hardware. The pool cover rolls out on its own at the touch of a button. Outdoor showers sit off the bedrooms, because at this house you come in from the water more often than from the road. It is a house that sustains family experiences for a lifetime.
